The plan for my second day was to activate two 4 point summits; Fan Nedd SW-007 and Craig y Llyn SW-010.
The journey to the small ‘off road’ parking spot at the foot of Fan Nedd (51.865N; 3.565W) was an interesting one, with the last few miles on a very narrow, winding road through the hills.
The route to the summit was clearly defined following the stone wall then heading across to the summit, past the cairn and onto the trig point. Compared to both Pen y Fan and Fan Fawr, this was an easy climb and didn’t take too long.
Very near the trig point there was a stone structure that gave a convenient place to set up and take some shelter from the wind. I had carried with me both HF and VHF antennas and was soon on the air using the Ft 817 on 2m FM. After 5 quick contacts, I switched to 20m and managed two S2S from Spain and Switzerland. After a few more QSOs on 20 (including KA1R once again) I ‘linked’ the dipole and worked a couple of stations on 40m.
- Nice quiet summit with a ‘useful’ structure at the top to set up your station
